Meeting New Clients and Contacts Through Networking

Great article lots of useful information.
Enjoy!

The ability to network is one of the most crucial skills any startup entrepreneur can have. How else will you meet the clients and contacts necessary to grow your business?
But many people are put off by the idea of networking, thinking it requires a phony, glad-handing personality that oozes insincerity. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Think a moment. What does a good networker do? How does he or she act? What is his or her basic attitude? You'll probably be surprised at how much you instinctively know about the subject.
You may decide, for example, that a good networker should be outgoing, sincere, friendly, supportive, a good listener or someone who follows up and stays in touch. To determine other skills an effective networker needs, simply ask yourself "How do I like to be treated? What kinds of people do I trust and consider good friends?"
Now that you have an idea of what attributes a good networker must have, take an objective look at your own interactive abilities. Do you consider yourself shy and regard networking groups as threatening? Do you tend to do all the talking in a conversation? Do you give other people referrals and ideas without a thought to your own personal gain? Can people count on your word?
Many people go to networking events, but very few know how to network effectively. Networking is more than just getting out and meeting people. Networking is a structured plan to get to know people who will do business with you or introduce you to those who will.
The best way to succeed at networking is to make a plan, commit to it, learn networking skills and execute your plan. To make the best plan, ask yourself: What do I want to achieve? How many leads (prospects) do I want per month? Where do my customers and prospects go to network? What business organizations would benefit my business? How can I build my image and my business's image? What would I like to volunteer to do in the community?
Make a five-year networking plan listing your five best customers, five targeted prime prospects and five targeted organizations. Next, set goals for involvement in each organization, determine how much time you will need to commit to each organization and prospect, and decide what kinds of results you expect.
Now that you have a plan, get committed. Tell yourself that you will devote enough time and effort to make it work. Half the battle of networking is getting out there and in the swim.
The other half of the battle is learning to network effectively. Typically, ineffective networkers attend several networking groups but visit with the same friends each time. Obviously, this behavior defeats the entire purpose of networking. If you stick with familiar faces, you never meet anyone new. And since most people stay within their circle of friends, newcomers view the organization as a group of cliques. This is one reason people fear going to new organizations by themselves -- they're afraid no one will notice them.
The trick with networking is to become proactive. This means taking control of the situation instead of just reacting to it. Networking requires going beyond your comfort zone and challenging yourself. Try these tips:
  • Set a goal to meet five or more new people at each event.
Whenever you attend a group, whether a party, a mixer or an industry luncheon, make a point of heading straight for people you don't know. Greet the newcomers (they will love you for it). If you don't make this goal a habit, you'll naturally gravitate toward the same old acquaintances.

  • Try one or two new groups per month.
You can attend almost any organization's meetings a few times before you must join. This is another way to stretch yourself and make a new set of contacts. Determine what business organizations and activities you would best fit into. It may be the chamber of commerce, the arts council, a museum society, a civic organization, a baseball league, a computer club or the PTA. Attend every function you can that synergizes your goals and customer/prospect interaction.

  • Carry your business cards with you everywhere.
After all, you never know when you might meet a key contact, and if you don't have your cards with you, you lose out. Take your cards to church, the gym, parties, the grocery store -- even on walks with the dog.

  • Don't make a beeline for your seat.
Frequently, you'll see people at networking groups sitting at the dinner table staring into space -- half an hour before the meal is due to start. Why are they sitting alone? Take full advantage of the valuable networking time before you have to sit down. Once the meeting starts, you won't be able to mingle.

  • Don't sit by people you know.Mealtime is a prime time for meeting new people. You may be in that seat for several hours, so don't limit your opportunities by sitting with your friends. This is a wonderful chance to get to know new people on either side of you. Sure, it's more comfortable to hobnob with familiar faces. But remember, you are spending precious time and money to attend this event. Get your money's worth; you can talk to your friends some other time.

  • Get active.
People remember and do business with leaders. Don't just warm a chair -- get involved and join a committee or become a board member. If you don't have time, volunteer to help with hospitality at the door or checking people in. This gives you a reason to talk to others, gets you involved in the inner workings of the group, and provides more visibility.

  • Be friendly and approachable.
Pretend you are hosting the event. Make people feel welcome. Find out what brought them there, and see if there's any way you can help them. Introduce them to others, make business suggestions or give them a referral. Not only will you probably make a friend, but putting others at ease eliminates self-consciousness. A side benefit: What goes around comes around. If you make the effort to help others, you'll soon find people helping you.

  • Set a goal for what you expect from each meeting.
Your goals can vary from meeting to meeting. Some examples might be: learning from the speaker's topic, discovering industry trends, looking for new prospects or connecting with peers. If you work out of your home, you may find your purpose is simply to get out and talk to people face to face. Focusing your mind on your goal before you even walk into the event keeps you on target.

  • Be willing to give to receive.
Networking is a two-way street. Don't expect new contacts to shower you with referrals and business unless you are equally generous. Follow up on your contacts; keep in touch; always share information or leads that might benefit them. You'll be paid back tenfold for your thoughtfulness.

F#@K CANCER Campaign

When Greg Mulligan's  brother Bernie was diagnosed with Stage 4 Esophageal cancer, Greg designed the F#@K CANCER shamrock and began the campaign with a Facebook group where he could vent his frustration at this disease.

Mulligan's brother was told this condition was present in him for 8 or 10 years and went undiagnosed because it carried no signs or symptoms. "I started this over a year ago when my brother was diagnosed with stage 4 esophagus cancer" said Greg, and he picked the Shamrock design because, "we are Irish and  the shamrock represents luck".  Luck for his brother and everyone walking around without symptoms who may be diagnosed with this condition.

Bernie Mulligan passed away from this disease at the age of 45, on October 1st, 2012.  In memory of Bernie and in support of all those going undiagnosed or suffering with this disease, we urge you to get involved and support the efforts of Greg Mulligan.

The F#@K CANCER design is on t-shirts and proceeds from those sales  "help people with early detection.  All proceeds from my shirt sales goes back to people fighting this disease and I have sent money to hospice and other organization," explained Greg.

You can show your support by joining Greg Mulligan's Facebook group or buy the t-shirts and help him, help people with early detection.  You can contact Greg directly at gmmulligan@sympatico.ca

Windsor Craft Beer Festival 2013

Let’s raise a glass together on October 18-19, 2013 as Windsor hosts its first festival dedicated to beer!

Local and craft brewers from across the province will participate in a festival that will celebrate a much loved libation. Rather than holding the event in a plaza, we are opting for a good ol’ fashion neighbourhood party.

The Windsor Craft Beer Festival is hosted by WindsorEats and will take place across the street from the recently opened Walkerville Brewery at the intersection of Argyle Rd. and Wyandotte St. E. The event is about local culture, the resurgence of Walkerville Brewery and the burgeoning craft beer movement happening across the province. There will be entertainment, craft beers from across the province, local eats and throughout the day we’ll have an ode to the brew. It’s going to be awesome!

While Hiram Walker is famous for distilling whiskey, many don’t know he also brewed beer from 1885-1956. Walker purchased the most modern brewing equipment of the day and shipped hops from the U.S. and his own farms in Essex County. Rich in history and character, there is no better neighbourhood than Old Walkerville to have a beer festival.

The event will use the history of Walkerville and its role in brewing to help in developing a festival that will be a uniquely Walkervillian experience. We want a celebratory atmosphere, a sense of camaraderie among participants. It will be a lively event with character.

Windsor Craft Beer Festival will add to the region’s festivals and add to establishing Windsor-Essex as a culinary destination and add to the vibrancy of an already great neighbourhood. Did we mention there’s beer?

Must be 19 and over to attend.

Powerhouse Professional Nomination

I'm really super excited!
Della Jones called me earlier and gave me some good news. Fast forward a couple of hours for dinner and to do a little work - then I came home and checked my email and it's great news all over again.

Soooooo here it is!

"Congratulations! You have been nominated for a Biz X Award! You should be very proud of this accomplishment! The Biz X Awards honour excellence in the Windsor Essex community and are presented by Windsor and metro Detroit's favourite business and people magazine, Biz X. This is the 16th year for our awards program and should you be victorious, it is a very prestigious award to win.

Readers of Biz X magazine have nominated you in the category of "POWERHOUSE PROFESSIONAL" ( a local business owner who has what it takes to keep his/her company profitable in today's tough times). (note voting closes Sept.20, 2013)"

Do I feel energized and ready to tackle the rest of September and beyond?
You better believe it!

September: Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Make sure you know the silent signs.

Ovarian Cancer: What All Women Should Know
September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month - a good time to review the facts. Even though this form of cancer is almost completely curable if caught in its earliest stages, it is still deadly when it goes undiagnosed. Unfortunately, it has few early symptoms and there is no reliable screening test, making timely diagnosis difficult. To help identify it at an early stage, women should talk with their physician if the following symptoms are persistent, even if they seem trivial:

General abdominal discomfort or pain (gas, indigestion, pressure, swelling, bloating, cramps)
Nausea, diarrhea, constipation or frequent urination
Loss of appetite
Feeling of fullness or abdominal swelling after a light meal
Weight gain or loss with no known reason
Abnormal bleeding from the vagina
Pelvic pressure (a feeling that one needs to urinate or defecate all the time)
Constant back or leg pain
A pelvic exam and an ultrasound can determine whether the ovaries require further evaluation. In addition to knowing the symptoms, two simple precautions can drastically increase the chance of early detection:

Give a thorough medical history to your gynecologist. Disclose any personal and family history of breast, endometrial, or colon cancer, as well as any use of fertility drugs (these may put you at higher risk).
Have an annual pelvic exam and routine sonograms.

Get the facts. Recognize the signs

Food Pick-up and Downtown Mission Donation

Westside Foods Olde Towne Grocer
Yesterday we dropped off the food we purchased for the Downtown Mission.  Approximately 110 pounds of pasta which can be used in so many ways and feed a large number of people.  This would not have been possible without the help of Westside Foods Olde Towne Grocer at 3242 Sandwich Street.

Within minutes of writing a post on our Facebook page asking for anyone who knows of a grocery store that is willing to double-up the products we purchase,   I received a phone call from Revan who volunteered to do exactly that.  He said it's their way of helping the community further.

We took pictures of the store and staff, the interview with Stefanie Masotti and delivering the goods to the Downtown Mission, which can be seen on our website's gallery.

History of Willistead Manor

Willistead Manor is a historic house located in the former town of Walkerville, Ontario, now part of Windsor, Ontario. Willistead Manor was designed by renowned architect Albert Kahn in the 16th-century Tudor-Jacobean style of an English manor house. It was built in 1904-1906, and was commissioned by Edward Chandler Walker, the second son of Hiram Walker. It is named after the first son, Willis Walker, a lawyer in Detroit, MI, who died young.
Contrary to popular belief, Hiram Walker never lived in the home. One of the unique features of the mansion is that it contained only one bedroom. Mr. and Mrs. Walker never had any children, and the coach houses to the manor provided ample room for guests. After Edward passed on in 1915, Mrs. Walker did not care to keep living in the big home alone, and she deeded the house and grounds to the town of Walkerville. When Walkerville was amalgamated with Windsor in 1935, it obtained ownership of Willistead.
In the years after its use as a residence, Willistead served as the Walkerville Town Hall, Art Gallery of Windsor and as a public library branch. In the late 1970s early 1980s the City of Windsor, afraid of the repairs and upkeep on the mansion, wanted to demolish the structure. Preservationists stepped in and the home was saved. Today the 36-room mansion is used as a banquet hall, and the three-acre (12,000 m²) grounds are incorporated in a larger public park. The house can be rented for occasions such as weddings, corporate meeting and private parties. The house is also decorated for the Christmas holiday by The Friends of Willistead and opened to the public.
